    Local Indian Name:
In India, cacti are commonly known as   "Cactus"   or   "Nagphani"   (in some regions). They do not have a specific local name but are often referred to by their scientific or common names.
    Scientific Name:
Cactaceae   (Family name; includes genera like  Opuntia ,  Echinocactus ,  Mammillaria , and  Cereus )
    Family:
    Cactaceae   (Cactus family)
    Category and Subcategory:
    Category:   Succulent, Ornamental Plant
    Subcategory:   Perennial, Desert Plant
    Native Region:
Cacti are native to the   Americas  , particularly arid and semi arid regions of North and South America, including deserts like the Sonoran, Mojave, and Atacama.
    Introduction:
Cacti are a diverse family of succulent plants known for their ability to thrive in harsh, dry environments. They are popular as ornamental plants due to their unique shapes, sizes, and flowers. Many species are adapted to store water in their stems, making them highly drought resistant.
    Importance & Benefits:
  1. Ornamental Value:  Cacti are prized for their unique appearance, making them ideal for indoor and outdoor decoration.
  2. Low Maintenance:  They are drought tolerant and require minimal care, making them suitable for beginners.
  3. Air Purification:  Like many plants, cacti help improve indoor air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.
  4. Medicinal Uses:  Some species, like  Opuntia , are used in traditional medicine for their anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
  5. Edible Uses:  Certain cacti, such as  Opuntia  (prickly pear), produce edible fruits and pads.
    Description and Cultivation:
Description:   Cacti are perennial plants with thick, fleshy stems adapted to store water. They often have spines instead of leaves and produce showy flowers in various colors.
Cultivation:   Cacti thrive in warm, dry environments and are commonly grown as houseplants or in rock gardens.
    Varieties and Cultivars:
Opuntia (Prickly Pear):   Known for its flat, paddle shaped stems and edible fruits.
Echinocactus (Barrel Cactus):   Features a barrel shaped body and golden spines.
Mammillaria (Pincushion Cactus):   Small, globular cacti with dense spines and colorful flowers.
Cereus (Columnar Cactus):   Tall, columnar cacti often used in landscaping.
Schlumbergera (Christmas Cactus):   Known for its segmented stems and holiday blooms.
    Location and Light:
Location:   Cacti thrive indoors in bright, indirect light. They can also be grown outdoors in warm, dry climates.
Light:   They require   bright, direct sunlight   for at least 6 hours daily. Insufficient light can lead to etiolation (stretching).
  Soil Preparation:
Cacti need   well draining, sandy soil   (pH 6.0–7.5). A mix of   cactus soil, perlite, and coarse sand   is ideal.
    Planting:
Use pots with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Plant the cactus so that the roots are just below the soil surface. Repot every 2–3 years to refresh the soil and accommodate growth.
    Watering:
Water cacti sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Reduce watering during the dormant winter period.
   Pruning:
Remove dead or damaged stems and spines to encourage new growth. Trim back overgrown stems to maintain a neat appearance. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid infection.
    Pest and Disease Management:
Common Pests:   Mealybugs, spider mites, and scale insects can infest cacti. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil for control.
Diseases:   Root rot due to overwatering is the most common issue. Ensure proper drainage and avoid waterlogging.
Prevention:   Regularly inspect plants and maintain proper care practices.
    Environmental Conditions:
Temperature:   Cacti prefer temperatures between   70–90°F (21–32°C)  . They are sensitive to cold and should be protected from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
Humidity:   They thrive in low humidity. High humidity can increase the risk of fungal diseases.
Air Circulation:   Ensure good airflow to prevent pests and diseases.
    Propagation:
Cuttings:   Cut a healthy stem or pad and allow it to callous for a few days before planting in well draining soil.
Seeds:   Sow seeds in a well draining mix and keep them warm and moist until germination.
Offsets:   Separate offsets (pups) from the parent plant and pot them individually.
    Uses:
  1. Ornamental:  Grown as indoor plants, in rock gardens, and in xeriscaping.
  2. Air Purification:  Helps improve indoor air quality.
  3. Medicinal:  Used in traditional medicine for treating wounds and inflammation.
  4. Edible:  Some species produce edible fruits and pads.
  5. Gifting:  Popular as gifts due to their unique appearance and low maintenance.
    Monetary Benefits:
Cacti are a profitable crop for nurseries and hobbyists. Specialty varieties and hybrids can fetch high prices in the market. They are also sold online and at garden centers.
